A voting body of more than 950 eligible video game media critics, analysts, and journalists determined the final 209 nominees in 45 categories. This year, the Academy also announced special Honorary Awards to be given out for the first time in the organization&#039;s history.  

The first-ever recipients will be Mike Acton, Andy Burke, and Geoff Evans for their outstanding community contribution and dedication to Insomniac&#039;s Nocturnal Initiative, a free open-source code, tools, and information sharing effort begun in 2008 that encourages better communication and lower development costs through the sharing of resources.  

With 37 nominations, Electronic Arts has more nominations than any other publisher this year.  Sony follows with 22 nominations, after having set a record in the previous year with 47 nominations.  Rounding out the double-digit publisher nominees are Ubisoft (16), Microsoft (15), and Square Enix (13).

With 19 nominations, the Electronic Arts studio system also holds the highest nomination tally among developers this year, with Mirror&#039;s Edge developer DICE (Digital Illusions) following with 13 nods.  Square Enix follows with 11 nods, while Little Big Planet developer Media Molecule has 10 nods.  Ubisoft rounds out the top five developers with 8 nominations.  

The nominees for Game of the Year are Gears of War 2, Left 4 Dead, Little Big Planet, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriot, and Mirror&#039;s Edge.  The nominees for Game of the Year represent 20.43% of the total nominations, down from 22.58% last year.  

Of the games which tallied three or more nominations this year, 58% of the nominations went to original properties (67), compared to franchises (49).  Last year, the comparison was 71:45 (61%).

Experts with the National Education Association, along with software companies, see the use of gaming devices as beneficial in the classroom, not just home entertainment. Parents and teachers have long viewed video games as a corrupting force rather than an educational tool, but, as a new generation of parents see the educational benefits of video games, educational gaming is becoming a trend.



Jayel Gibson, author, educator and video game advocate, supports the use of video games as an educational tool to spark creativity in kids of all ages. An adjunct professor at <a href="http://www.socc.edu/" onclick="linkClick( this.href );"  target="_blank" title="SWOCC">Southwestern Oregon Community College</a>,  and a popular fantasy author, she often discusses gaming in the classroom and using video games for creative purposes. Parents and teachers have long viewed video games as a corrupting force rather than an educational tool, but, as a new generation of parents see the educational benefits of video games, educational gaming is becoming a trend.



Jayel Gibson, author, educator and video game advocate, supports the use of video games as an educational tool to spark creativity in kids of all ages. An adjunct professor at <a href="http://www.socc.edu/" onclick="linkClick( this.href );"  target="_blank" title="SWOCC">Southwestern Oregon Community College</a>,  and a popular fantasy author, she often discusses gaming in the classroom and using video games for creative purposes. Gibson&#039;s years spent gaming served as an inspiration for her novels, including her newest book &quot;Quondam&quot; (Synergy Books, May 2008, ISBN 978-1-933538-83-9, $14.95).

&quot;Gaming has enormous potential as a teaching tool,&quot; says Gibson, an elementary school teacher for over 15 years with two Teacher of the Year awards for her use of technology in the classroom. &quot;Too many people have labeled video games as a negative influence, but as a member of the gaming community and teacher, I have seen video games used to teach as they entertain.&quot;

Gibson says learning does not just come from the video games designed specifically for education, some of the most effective teaching video-game genres are management, role-playing and strategy. These types of games offer opportunities to develop new learning strategies, problem solving and real-life skills with built-in skill leveling.

Aware of the ongoing debate concerning video games and education, Gibson incorporates her own gaming experiences in the fourth installment of her &quot;Ancient Mirrors&quot; series. Continuing to weave elements from her gaming experience, &quot;Quondam&quot; follows Cwen of Aaradan, who falls through a mysterious portal into Quondam and must battle to unseat the evil wood nymph queen. &quot;Quondam&quot; received the 2008 National Indie Excellence Award in the fantasy and sci-fi category.

In what can only be seen as an extreme love for Microsoft&#039;s game console X box 360, four Seattle geeks have done what no one before them has ever done: create a unique one-of-a-kind idea to win an endorsement contract from Microsoft. 

The good news? They did it without any bling. No girls wagging, no gold chains, no raunchy lyrics and not one mention of drugs or sex. They are just four regular guys doing something unique and original.

According to their website, they were brought together by a dream that led all four of them to a place near the Microsoft campus known as Redmond Woods at noon.  When the four arrived, they were greeted by an old man known as &quot;Grandfather&quot; who pleads with them to follow their destiny and become The X Box Boys.

A comic strip located on the four&#039;s website takes readers on a colorful journey and readers can actually become engrossed as they see grandfather digging up what looks like the Microsoft 360 ORB and holding it to the sky, directing it to find the four that will &quot;Uphold gaming integrity and the light in the world of gaming&quot;. With further research, one finds the &quot;Scroll&#039;s of Orb&quot;, which seem to have been around since the time of Moses, and also the &quot;Orb&quot; itself, which each one of the X Box Boys seem to be responsible for.

With only one goal in mind and with ages ranging from 17 to 35, the X Box Boys have taken the gaming industry by storm with record download numbers coming in from as far away as India, China, Mexico and South America. 

Some of the videos are being downloaded on the popular site YouTube and it is hard to tell the correct download numbers as the video is everywhere. One particular release located at <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3IIKfDg63OE" onclick="linkClick( this.href );"  target="_blank" title="You Tube Video">YouTube</a> has nothing but praise for the green men.

Success does not come without the naysayer crowd, however. The racy website Kotaku.com, known for its ridiculous blog entries, was quick to jump on the boys&#039; success and took it upon themselves to do a feature piece on the X Box Boys, exposing their actual identities before the boys ever launched the completed version of their website. Kotaku.com also felt the need to mention the fact that each one of the boys are Christians. 

Regardless of the naysayer bunch at Kotaku.com, and the replies the blog is getting, the songs have nothing to do with converting people to anything other than X Box 360.

The <a href="http://www.acm.org/pubs/cie/scholarships.html" onclick="linkClick( this.href );"  target="_blank" title="2006 Annual Scholarship Awards Reception">2006 Annual Scholarship Awards Reception</a> is co-sponsored by the American Film Institute (AFI) and organized by the Institute for Education, Research, and Scholarships (IFERS) in association with ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) and ACM Computers in Entertainment.

Mr. Quincy Jones has been an editorial board member of ACM Computers in Entertainment since 2003. A video interview of Quincy appeared in the January/March 2004 issue online at the <a href="http://www.acm.org/pubs/cie.html" onclick="linkClick( this.href );"  target="_blank" title="ACM Computers in Entertainment">ACM Computers in Entertainment</a> magazine. Bid Whist is a pastime that is important to African American culture. Bid Whist is a card game much like Bridge, which is enjoyed by thousands of Americans. The game is played predominately but not exclusively by African Americans. 

You can hardly go to an African American function such as a family reunion, house party, or picnic, without seeing players enjoying Bid Whist. It is one of the few truly purely African American traditions.
